Harvesting clams used to sustain the
residents of Bolívar. The shrimp industry has cut down some 90%
of the Ecuadorian mangroves along the coast. Mangroves, as shown in
this photograph, are necessary to support the harvesting of clams. The
shrimp industry is gradually leaving Ecuador for Asian sites.
